Tabi no Tochuu (The Journey) Full English Lyrics

I'd been working on these lyrics for a long time... a long, long time actually... haha
Upon making the decision to add the full song to a future free single, I knew that I would need a full set of lyrics. As with the TV version-- the song is based fairly close to the translation of the original song.
Natsumi-san has the most beautiful voice and I know I'll never be able to capture her elegance or brilliance with my own voice but hopefully the English is well received among fans of the original.
Although I'm older than her, I feel extremely humbled to be singing her song in my own words.
That's all I can really say, I guess...
I feel attached to this song on many levels. It is about life, adventure, love, pain and sacrifice.
At any rate.. please enjoy my lyrics and make sure to support the official release of the anime Spice and Wolf-- and Natsumi in her future endeavors if you feel so inclined to.

English Lyrics by: SoRo

I've been wandering, on this road alone; I'd lost myself long ago...
And my frozen heart has been long to thaw, waiting for the sun...
But the day you came, light had cleared the way- for us to find something new!
And now we can run, under this bright sun; together- discover the way

Of all the unknown songs travelers sing, is there one written for me?
'Cause it sounds so familiar to mine old ears; do you also hear what I hear?

If the world that I had dreamed of exists somewhere in this world then;
Should we search for this great 'somewhere' that the wind will lead us to?
Freezing day-breaks and parched mid-days, through them someway we may find it
In the darkness, and the cold nights- we can keep eachother warm...

Since the day I came, upon such striking eyes; I knew I can't let you go...
Because in those orbs, reflects things unseen; unknown even to the world...
I know many things, only stars can tell; that all we old souls must know
Even though I cry and I feel so sorrowful; t'is me that great fate has bestowed.

Harbors far in the east, tall Western seaside cliffs - still cannot compare...
Deep in lush forests and high in watch towers - There must be something there!
High on the northern hill, watching the harvest moon swaying on the waves - ahh!

If the love that I had dreamed of exists only on this earth then
Shall I live a modest short life and swear never to regret?
Through the cold and snowy weather, we'll be fine if we're together!
Let's continue with eyes open- face the world that's still unseen...

La, la, lai-la
La, la, lai-la
La, la, lai-la
La, la, lai-la
La, la, lai-la
La, la, lai-la, lai-la, la, la, la...
La, la, lai-la
La, la, lai-la
La, la, lai-la
La, la, lai-la
La, la, lai-la
La, la, lai-la, lai-la, la, la, la...

English Lyrics by: SoRo

Hey, if we only get one chance to live… would it be best to just walk away?
Hey, if there are still things that we need to say… wouldn’t it be wrong to tell a lie?

All the darkest nights end when sun arrives
And always repeat that way…

Hey, even if you forget our promise… could you just make sure you never change?
Hey, and in the end if I reach out to you… could you please just once call out my name?

Looking through the past, from the start till’ now
I had always hoped that these tears would stop falling someday!
Oh~

Faraway, faraway, all the shadows of the past will melt and fade… searching for the light someday!
Faraway, faraway, all the hopes and dreams that we once had cascade… and fall away!

The light and dark, they intersect and it balances out
‘cuz beyond this pain… lies a brighter day.

NOTE:

Writing these lyrics was very difficult for me but It came to a point where I had to scrap my entire draft and just write from scratch with one main theme in mind while trying to keep true to the original lyrics.
To me, these words seem so sorrowful and full of regret but also hope. They read like a person writing a letter to a loved one who had passed away; so I thought of the English lyrics the same way, like a prayer or a letter to someone who will never be able to respond.
I hope they came out well because I really do feel a connection with this song and it's themes of loss and hope.

Want some advice for writing lyrics?

Don't ask me!!
I don't know what I'm doing!
haha

A young youtuber messaged me a few weeks ago in hopes that I would give her advice in how to write original lyrics.
Unfortunately, I could not help her much because my 'talent' (if I do have any talent at all- ha) starts and ends at translations. I've failed countless times at writing any original music. It seems that for me, I'm only able to take someone elses feelings and words-- and changing them around to suit an English listener.

I did tell her to write a story, though. Every song is a story... some more vague than others- but a good song will have a beginning-middle-end just the same way that a story does.

As for rhyming schemes-- I prefer not to rhyme everything. To me, it often makes lyrics sound juvenile. Just like good poetry doesn't necessarily have to rhyme at all-- neither do lyrics. It is important to make them sound fluid-- to make them mesh with the melody of the music and sound cohesive; but that's all in how it sounds. You can't tell how well lyrics will work until you try singing them.
I often start out with a rough draft--- a direct translation; then write an adaptation slowly-- line by line; reversing some lines so that the timeline of the story in the song makes sense.
It is also important that the song MAKES SENSE. I cannot stress it enough!! XD
I've seen way too many 'fandubs' with lyrics that make no sense in English-- like someone just read the extremely abstract- direct translation from the Japanese version... it's....it's...uhh... y'know?

I'm not a professional in any sense, so don't take my advice to heart-- it's really just my own opinion.
Sing the way you want- write the way you want- do it because you enjoy doing it if for no other reason at all.
"That's all I have to tell you-
That's all I've got to say!"
